Uniform Civil Code

The Congress has led the charge against the move, saying the 21st Law Commission had said that it is “neither necessary nor desirable at this stage” to have a Uniform Civil Code². The opposition parties have been accused of playing "vote bank politics" and instigating people in the name of the Uniform Civil Code.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a strong push for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India. He has asked how can the country function with dual laws that govern personal matters³ and questioned 'how can a country run on two laws?

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been a contentious issue in India for decades. The UCC is a proposal to replace the personal laws of various religious communities with a common set of rules governing every citizen.

Arguments for UCC include that it would promote gender equality and secularism. It would also help in the integration of the country by removing the differences between different communities.

Arguments against UCC include that it would infringe upon the rights of religious minorities. It would also lead to the loss of cultural identity and diversity.
