Three different aircraft have detected repetitive underwater sounds for more than two days, according to an expert.

An undated photo shows the Titan submersible, operated by OceanGate Expeditions, diving to explore the wreckage of the sunken Titanic off the coast of Newfoundland.

The search for the missing submarine that was taking five passengers to the underwater Titanic wreck has been expanded to double the search area after underwater noises were detected for the second day in a row.

Deep sea explorer Dr David Gallo said that repetitive underwater noises were heard by three different aircraft with sensors for two-plus days.

However, a US Coast Guard official said that while the sounds that have been detected offer a chance to narrow the search, their exact location and source have not yet been determined.

The US Coast Guard said that authorities are still holding out hope of saving those onboard, but estimates point to the oxygen in the submarine running out as early as Thursday morning local time.

The missing submarine, Titan, was carrying five people: pilot Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate Expeditions; British adventurer Hamish Harding; Pakistani father-son duo Shahzada and Suleman Dawood; and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet.

Newly uncovered allegations suggest that there had been significant warnings made about the vessel's safety prior to its disappearance.

The five people on board the missing submarine Titan are:

1. Shahzada Dawood, a prominent Pakistani businessman and vice chairman of Engro Corporation.

2. Suleman Dawood, his son Hamish Harding, a British billionaire and pilot.

3. Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate Expeditions.

4. Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a 77 year old French explorer and Titanic expert.
