Venus Williams failed to pull off another upset at the Birmingham Classic. The former world No. 1, who is now ranked No. 697, fell 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the grass-court event on Thursday. Williams had beaten Camila Giorgi, ranked 48th, on Monday for her first win over a top-50 player since 2017. She had been sidelined for six months with a hamstring injury that she sustained in Auckland in January.

Williams, who had her right knee taped up against Ostapenko, took a medical timeout off the court at 2-2 in the second set. She seemed to be in pain when she came back to the court but did not give up, battling for every point and even fending off a match point at 5-3 before rallying to win four straight games and force a third set.

Williams' movement was hampered by the end of the third set, which lasted 44 minutes, and Ostapenko clinched the win with a forehand winner.

Williams, who has won seven Grand Slam titles and five Wimbledon singles crowns, received a wild card from the All England Club for this year's event, and she has proved worthy of it.

Barbora Krejcikova, the top seed, continued her impressive run by reaching the last eight with a straight-set victory over her compatriot Tereza Martincova.

Krejcikova, who is ranked No. 12, has not lost a set in Birmingham and won 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday.

She had beaten Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.

Sorana Cirstea, the No. 8 seed from Romania, lost 6-3, 6-7 (1), 6-4 to Poland's Magdalena Frech, while Canada's Rebecca Marino edged out Emina Bektas of the U.S., ranked 150th, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (1).
