Karma is a Pali word that means "action" or "doing". It refers to the intentional acts of body, speech, and mind that have consequences for ourselves and others. According to the Buddhist philosophy, karma is not a punishment or a reward, but a natural law of cause and effect. The Buddha taught that karma is the main factor that determines the kind of rebirth in samsara, the cycle of existence. To break free from samsara, we need to understand and practice the laws of karma.

 

The laws of karma are not fixed or rigid rules, but general principles that describe how karma works. Different traditions may have different ways of explaining them, but they all agree on the basic idea that our actions have results that correspond to their nature and intention. Here are 12 laws of karma that can help us live more skillfully and wisely:


1. The Law of Cause and Effect: This is the most fundamental law of karma, which states that every action has a corresponding result. Whatever we do, say, or think will have an effect on ourselves and others, sooner or later. Therefore, we should be mindful of our actions and their consequences.

 

2. The Law of Creation: This law states that we are co-creators of our own reality. We cannot blame others or external circumstances for our happiness or suffering. We have the power and responsibility to shape our own destiny by our choices and actions.

 

3. The Law of Humility: This law states that we need to accept the reality as it is, not as we wish it to be. We cannot change something unless we acknowledge its existence and nature. By being humble, we can learn from our mistakes and grow from them.

 

4. The Law of Growth: This law states that we can only change ourselves, not others. We cannot expect others to change according to our wishes or demands. We can only focus on our own improvement and transformation.

 

5. The Law of Responsibility: This law states that we are responsible for everything that happens in our lives. We cannot escape the consequences of our actions by blaming others or denying our role. We have to face the results of our karma and learn from them.

 

6. The Law of Connection: This law states that everything is connected and interdependent. Nothing happens in isolation or by chance. Every action has a ripple effect that affects everything else. We are all part of a larger whole and we affect each other in various ways.

 

7. The Law of Focus: This law states that we need to concentrate on one thing at a time and not be distracted by multiple goals or desires. By focusing on what is important and meaningful, we can achieve more and avoid unnecessary conflicts.

 

8. The Law of Giving and Hospitality: This law states that we need to give generously and graciously to others without expecting anything in return. By giving, we receive more in return, not necessarily in material terms, but in spiritual terms. Giving also creates positive karma and attracts more abundance.

 

9. The Law of Here and Now: This law states that we need to live in the present moment and not dwell on the past or worry about the future. By being fully present, we can enjoy life more and avoid creating negative karma by regretting or resenting what happened or what might happen.

 

10. The Law of Change: This law states that history repeats itself until we learn from it and change our patterns of behavior. Change is inevitable and necessary for growth and evolution. We should embrace change and not resist it.

 

11. The Law of Patience and Reward: This law states that we need to be patient and persistent in pursuing our goals and dreams. We cannot expect instant gratification or success without effort and sacrifice. We should trust the process and the timing of the universe and know that we will receive our reward when we are ready.

 

12. The Law of Significance and Inspiration: This law states that every action, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, has a significant impact on the world. We should act with purpose and intention, knowing that we are contributing to the greater good. We should also inspire others by our example and share our wisdom and compassion.
